EV Charger Installation in Perth: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Electric vehicle sales in WA have been growing steadily, with the BMW iX3, Tesla Model Y, BYD Atto 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 among the most common new registrations. With them comes a practical question most new owners face quickly: do I need a dedicated home charger, and what does installation actually involve?

The short answer is yes, a dedicated charger makes a meaningful difference to how useful your EV is day to day. Here is what you need to know before you commit.

Why Home Charging Is Worth It

Most EV owners do the bulk of their charging at home overnight. A standard 10-amp household power point, sometimes called Level 1 charging, tops up a battery at roughly 10-15km of range per hour. For shorter daily drives that might be adequate, but for most modern EVs it is slow enough that the battery may not fully charge overnight.

A BYD Atto 3, for example, has a 60.5kWh battery. On a standard 10A point running at around 2.4kW, a full charge from empty takes over 25 hours. On a dedicated 7kW home charger, that drops to under 9 hours. For a Tesla Model Y Long Range with its 82kWh battery, the difference is even more pronounced.

A dedicated EV charger uses a 32A circuit and can add 50-100km of range per hour depending on the vehicle. That is the difference between waking up to a half-charged car and one that is ready for the day.

Level 1 vs Level 2: What Is the Actual Difference?

Level 1 - Standard Power Point

  • Uses an existing 10A or 15A power point

  • Charges at roughly 2-3kW

  • Adds approximately 10-15km of range per hour

  • No installation cost, but slow for most modern EVs with larger batteries

Level 2 - Dedicated EV Charger

  • Requires a dedicated 32A circuit installed by a licensed electrician

  • Charges at 7-22kW depending on the unit and the vehicle's onboard charger

  • Adds approximately 50-100km or more of range per hour

  • Requires installation but dramatically reduces charge time for most WA drivers

For most households running a mid-to-large range EV, Level 2 is the practical and cost-effective choice over time.

What Installation Involves

Installing a home EV charger is licensed electrical work. The process typically covers four things:

1. Switchboard assessment.    A 32A charger draws sustained high current. Older switchboards, particularly those still using ceramic fuses, may need upgrading before a charger can be safely connected. If the switchboard is due for attention, it is usually more cost-effective to do it at the same time.

2. Dedicated circuit.    The charger needs its own dedicated 32A circuit run from the switchboard to the charge point location.

3. Unit installation.    The wall-mounted charging unit is installed in the garage or on an exterior wall near where the vehicle parks.

4. Compliance testing.    The completed installation is tested and certified to Australian wiring standards.

Does Your Switchboard Need Upgrading?

This is the question that catches some homeowners off guard. A 32A EV circuit draws sustained high load, and if your switchboard is already near capacity or uses older technology, it may need upgrading first. Signs to watch for:

  • Still uses ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers (common in Perth homes built before the mid-1980s)

  • You regularly trip circuits when running multiple appliances at once

  • No safety switches (RCDs) protecting all circuits

  • Has not been assessed by a licensed electrician in the past 10 years

A switchboard upgrade improves the safety of your entire home's electrical system, not just the EV charger connection. If it needs doing, it is better to know now.

Where to Install the Charger

Most Perth homeowners install their charger in the garage or on an exterior wall near where they park. A few practical considerations for WA homes:

  • EV charger cables are typically 5-8 metres long. The unit needs to be close enough to reach the vehicle's charge port without the cable under tension.

  • If parking outdoors, the charger must be rated for outdoor installation with an appropriate IP rating to handle WA's UV exposure and summer conditions.

  • The charge port is not always on the side you expect - the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 charge at the rear passenger side, the BYD Atto 3 at the front passenger side, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 at the rear driver's side. Check your vehicle's port location before deciding on charger placement.
